‘Prison is not a joke’ – Joana Gyan Cudjoe warns youth after emotional Nsawam visit

Member of Parliament (MP) for Amenfi Central, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, has called for a special legal support program to assist prison inmates jailed for minor offences due to lack of legal representation.

Speaking during a visit to Nsawam Prison on May 21, 2026, the MP said many inmates are serving time for lesser crimes “simply because they did not have legal representation.”

She proposed that lawyers should engage directly with inmates to understand the circumstances of their imprisonment and work with prison officers to explore possible interventions.

“Crimes that are less will be approached in order to rescue some of the inmates, and we are willing to seek financial support to back such a process,” Cudjoe told the media after the visit.

“Their destinies cannot be locked in prisons, and we must take bold steps to bring out those who did not have lawyers to fight for them,” she added.

The MP stressed that inmates should not be looked down upon, noting that many have promising futures.

She pledged to continue exploring avenues to assist deserving inmates through her foundation, working with stakeholders to give them a second chance.
