A new model STEM Girls Senior High School in Busunu, will be named Mma Nneba STEM Girls Senior High School in honour of President John Dramani Mahama’s mother.

Paramount chief of Busunu traditional area, Busunuwura Monasa Jonokpowu II, announced during the sod cutting ceremony on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

The chief described Mma Nneba as “a beautiful daughter of ours, a very hardworking, industrious and generous woman” whose roots are in the town.

He said naming the school after her was a tribute from the people of Busunu, noting they were “very proud that this sod cutting is done by no other person but our own son whose mother is a native of this town.”

President Mahama performed the sod cutting for the project, which the chief called the fulfilment of a dream the community has held for nearly two decades.

“The people of Busunu have yearned for a Senior High School for almost two decades. Today, we are so excited that at long last, our dream for a Senior High School has become a reality,” Busunuwura Monasa Jonokpowu II said.

He described the Busunu STEM model SHS as “a well packaged project with every facility that is needed for a Senior High School to function effectively,” and pledged the support of chiefs and residents to ensure smooth execution.

The chief also appealed to the contractor to adhere strictly to “timelines, specifications and value for money to ensure that this project stands the test of time,” adding that the project is funded from “a common pool of national resources where every contractor who delivers is paid from.”

During his speech, the chief thanked President Mahama for his contribution to the Busunu Multipurpose Community Centre, a GH¢4,000,000 project funded from traditional area royalties.

The centre, which has been roofed and awaits finishing, includes a conference hall, library, ICT centre, banking hall, and office space.

He expressed hope that the President would commission it during the Busunu Home Coming Ceremony in December 2026.

The chief also announced that land has been made available for a police training school in Busunu, appealed for the town’s inclusion in the “big push” for township roads and drains to curb perennial flooding, and offered large parcels within the Busunu Planning Scheme at no cost for future government projects.

Busunuwura Monasa Jonokpowu II extended “heartfelt appreciation” to Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, the Savannah Regional Minister, and the West Gonja Municipal Chief Executive for their roles in making the STEM school project a reality.

He further expressed hope that President Mahama would return to commission the Mma Nneba STEM Girls Senior High School once construction is complete.

“Just as we gather here to break ground for this historic project, it is our expectation and prayer that you will come again to commission the project when construction works are completed,” he said.
