Four suspected illegal miners have reportedly died after a galamsey pit collapsed on them at Sukuumu, near Bepotenten, in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
The land was initially allocated to Volta Resource, a mining company, which allegedly handed the area over to illegal miners for mining activities.
However, the government is said to have later tasked a company with reclaiming the degraded land.
During the ongoing reclamation exercise, the victims reportedly entered the abandoned mining pit to engage in illegal mining before it suddenly collapsed, trapping them.
An emergency response team, led by the Ghana Police Service, rushed to the scene to support rescue efforts.
The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the hospital for autopsy and preservation, while investigations are underway.
