The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has issued a travel advisory urging Ghanaian nationals to exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential travel to South Africa until further notice.
The advisory, dated June 1, 2026, cited increasing xenophobic attacks in South Africa targeting Africans, which have resulted in injuries, business closures, looting, and property loss.
According to the statement, the Mahama Administration has lodged diplomatic protests, summoned the South African Acting High Commissioner, petitioned the African Union, and initiated evacuation of Ghanaian nationals as part of measures to safeguard citizens.
That said, Ghanaians currently in South Africa have been advised to “maintain regular contact with the Ghana High Commission for consular services and support.”
It further noted that Ghanaian authorities are collaborating with South African officials to ensure evacuation and safety arrangements.
The advisory called on the South African government to provide security for targeted groups of Africans in its territory and take measures to enforce law and order.
It reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the welfare of its nationals both at home and abroad.
