Heavy rains that swept through Accra on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 have triggered seven fire outbreaks, flash floods, and a building collapse that left shops damaged, residents displaced, with at least five people trapped.

Fire gutted several shops around the Makola area opposite the Central Police Station in Accra Central.

Videos showed traders rushing to salvage goods as flames spread. One firefighter was injured battling the blaze, which ADO 1 Alex King Nartey described as “very dire.” A separate shop fire opposite the Accra City Fire Station at Makola was already out when firefighters arrived at 12:50am Thursday, with some items partially damaged.

A fully developed fire also broke out at Accra Water Works, opposite the Central Police Station, at 8:05pm.

Reinforcements from four stations worked until 3:41am to fully extinguish it. The blaze destroyed the Accra Central Police Barracks Annex, including 32 rooms and a one-storey building.

One firefighter was critically injured but is now stable. No fatalities were recorded.

Firefighters swiftly contained a fire involving underground cables behind a self-contained residential facility in the Kanda Post Office area at 9:49pm. on Wednesday. No casualties were recorded. Residents had attributed it to a fault in an underground electrical cable.

It was successfully contained with no casualties. The same station also carried out two flood rescues around 5:40pm at Oyarifa KB Junction and Old Ashongman near Bohye Church, where nine persons trapped by floodwaters were saved without injuries.

Near the police station at Nungua Cold, a residential structure caught fire at 1:56am, on Thursday, June 4.

Firefighters from the Trade Fair Fire Station found a single room and a porch used as a kitchen partially burnt. No casualties were reported.

An ECG pole with installed meters was completely burnt at Kuntense Satellite. The Amasaman Fire Station responded to the fire at 4:03am, Thursday. No casualties were recorded.

A one-storey residential building collapsed during the evening’s heavy rain at Adenta Newsite near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket, trapping five occupants: two women, three men, including three children.

Community members rescued two injured people before rescuers arrived. Firefighters later pulled two more from the debris.

All four are receiving treatment at the 37 Military Hospital. A dog was also rescued. Operations are ongoing for the remaining woman still trapped.

The Service commended the swift response of firefighters across all affected stations and urged the public to remain vigilant during and after heavy rains.

The causes of the fires remain under investigation.
