The Government has confirmed the resignation of Council of State member Justice Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo and Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Bossman Eric Asare.
Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced the development during a press briefing at the Presidency, where he addressed a number of issues that had generated public discussion in recent days.
According to him, Justice Akuffo submitted a letter to President John Dramani Mahama on September 25, 2025, expressing her desire to resign from the Council of State.
He explained that although the resignation letter did not state any reasons for her decision, the President initially delayed accepting it at the request of the Council of State, which sought time to engage her and determine whether any concerns could be addressed.
“The Council of State later informed the President that they had engaged her and that, as far as they were concerned, the resignation could be accepted,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu said.
He noted that President Mahama has since formally accepted the resignation, bringing Justice Akuffo’s tenure on the Council of State to an end.
“The law is clear on the process required to replace her, and that process is currently underway. In due course, a replacement will be announced,” he added.
The Government Communications Minister also confirmed that Dr Bossman Asare has tendered his resignation as Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, effective July 31, 2026.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, Dr Asare indicated in his resignation letter that he intends to return to academia and continue his career at the University of Ghana.
“He conveyed his appreciation to the President and the people of Ghana for the opportunity to serve in that capacity,” the Minister stated.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu further disclosed that another Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mr Samuel Tettey, has retired from the Commission.
He said processes are already underway to fill the vacancies, adding that a nominee to replace Mr Tettey has been submitted to the Council of State for consideration.
“Once that process is completed, an announcement will be made regarding his replacement, and in due course, a replacement will also be found for Dr Bossman Asare,” he said.
The Minister assured the public that the necessary constitutional procedures would be followed to ensure continuity in the work of both the Council of State and the Electoral Commission.
The announcement brings clarity to recent media reports and speculation surrounding the status of the two public officials, with government insisting that all replacement processes are proceeding in accordance with the law.
