The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has said it is closely monitoring ongoing power interruptions by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following heavy downpours in Accra on Monday, June 29, 2026.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 29, 2026, the Commission said the unplanned outages followed the shutdown of Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations after they became severely flooded and dangerous to operate.

“For the sake of public safety and the prevention of loss of human life, the Commission in consultation with the service providers has agreed to the shutting down of Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations,” PURC stated.

The shutdown has led to a disruption in power supply to several parts of the Greater Accra Region.

PURC said independent technical teams are on the field to assess the level of damage and are in constant touch with GRIDCo and ECG to resolve the issues in the shortest possible time.

The Commission said it will continue to monitor the situation and update consumers to reduce the duration of outages and restore power quickly.

The regulator also acknowledged the frustration of consumers and businesses affected by the unannounced outages.

“The Commission sincerely apologises for any inconveniences caused as a result of this unfortunate act of nature,” it said.

Consumers have been urged to report further challenges to PURC on 0302240046, WhatsApp 0540126201/0559722581, or Toll-Free 0800100700.

“The Commission remains committed to balancing the interests of both the utility providers and consumers to ensure the delivery of safe, stable, and reliable utility services,” the statement added.
