The Management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has responded to a video circulating on social media by musicia Mzbel, which alleged that her elder sister died as a result of the unavailability of a bed at the hospital.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, KBTH said it takes all allegations concerning patient care “with the utmost seriousness” and has made efforts to contact Mzbel and her family to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The hospital said it is particularly seeking to determine whether the deceased was referred to KBTH and denied admission upon arrival, or whether the patient had not yet been transferred and was advised to await the availability of a bed.
“As at the time of this notice, the Hospital has not been able to engage the family directly to verify the facts,” Management stated.
It is therefore calling on Mzbel to provide the necessary information to enable investigations into the claims made in the video.
KBTH also reiterated government policy on emergency care. Citing the 2026 State of the Nation Address directive that no public hospital should refuse an emergency case, the hospital said the Board had directed strict compliance and that the Minister for Health had reinforced the directive.
The hospital added that it has acquired additional beds and facilities to ease bed pressure.
“Management has consistently reminded all clinical and emergency departments of their obligation to provide emergency care in accordance with national policy,” the statement said. It added that any deliberate refusal to attend to an emergency patient would be regarded as a serious breach and investigated thoroughly.
The hospital further urged patients and relatives to use its official complaints channels, including its telephone exchange, direct line 0244 406 700, the complaints portal on www.kbth.gov.gh, and QR codes displayed in the facility.
It noted that complaints submitted through these channels are “promptly investigated” to ensure continuous improvement in service delivery.
The hospital said it remains committed to providing “safe, timely and quality healthcare” and extended its condolences to the bereaved family.
“Management reiterates its commitment to establishing the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident in a fair, transparent and professional manner,” the statement read.
