President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the importance of patriotism when representing Ghana in the national colours and expressed disappointment over players who cannot recite the national anthem.
According to the President, one’s ability to sing Ghana’s anthem should be considered before earning a call-up to the Black Stars.
Addressing a gathering at the Jubilee House, Mr. Mahama jokingly asserted that the ability to sing the national anthem should be a requirement for players seeking to represent the national team henceforth.
“During the World Cup, our players did not sing the national anthem. All the other players sang their national anthem with pride. Ours were quiet. It should be a qualification for playing for the national team. If you cannot sing the anthem, you cannot be in the team,” Mr. Mahama said.
The President’s humorous statement was made while drawing comparisons between the Black Stars and other countries at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He highlighted how players of those countries could fluently sing their anthems before kick-off.
Ghana had a disappointing campaign at the Mundial where they failed to progress past the Round of 32.
