Member of Parliament (MP) for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has condemned the arrest of NPP communicator Dennis Miracles Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), warning that it fits an “increasingly alarming” pattern of targeting critics of government.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Awuku said Mr. Aboagye was picked up by EOCO barely hours after announcing his bid for the NPP National Communications Director position.
“Barely hours after declaring his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the NPP, Dennis Miracles Aboagye finds himself in EOCO custody. Coincidence? Perhaps,” Mr. Awuku wrote.
According to him, the situation goes beyond party communicators.
“It is becoming increasingly alarming to see opposition communicators suppressed, harassed and intimidated whenever they hold the government accountable. The trend now includes TikTokers and social media activists. A troubling pattern appears to be emerging,” he stated.
Mr. Awuku questioned whether the government was uncomfortable with criticism and reiterated the role of the opposition.
“The opposition exists to provide frank, fearless and effective scrutiny of government, not to be silenced for doing so,” he said.
He called for due process in Mr. Aboagye’s case.
“If Miracles has broken the law, let the charges be made known and let the courts decide. If not, he should be released,” he added.
“Governments come and go, but posterity remains, and it never forgets,” the MP added.
