A tanker carrying naphtha has caught fire at the Kpone Barrier on Monday afternoon, July 20 injuring one firefighter.

Three fire tenders from Freezones, Tema Industrial Area, and Motorway were deployed to the scene.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said the fire was officially under control and out of danger as at 12:55 p.m, with efforts still ongoing to fully extinguish it. Officials said the fire had been confined earlier at 13:16 p.m to prevent further spread.

One firefighter sustained burns at the scene and has been rushed to the Tema General Hospital for immediate medical care. No other casualties have been reported.

Officials confirmed the tanker was carrying naphtha, a highly volatile petroleum product.

Health and safety officials warned that naphtha gives off combustible vapors and must be handled in well-ventilated areas. Prolonged inhalation or skin contact can cause respiratory irritation, dizziness, and central nervous system effects. The chemical is also hazardous to the environment as it does not break down easily and can contaminate soil and aquatic ecosystems.
