The Wenchi Divisional Police has restored calm at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region following violent disturbances during the Yam festival celebration that left two people dead and 14 others injured.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the four junction at Nchiraa, according to a statement from the Bono Regional Police Command.
Police say two persons died, and thirteen others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment.
The release dated Monday, October 5, indicates the injured are on admission while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the disturbances erupted around 5:30 p.m. after the Yam festival programme had ended.
According to the police, Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace when a gunshot was heard, triggering the chaos.
The Bono Regional Police Command says patrols have been intensified in Nchiraa and the situation remains calm.
“The Bono Regional Police Command assures the public that every effort is being made to arrest any individual involved in the disturbances,” the statement signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, said.
