Nigerian-Ghanaian-based comedian, Parrot Mouth, has blamed actor and comedian LilWin for creating the perception that Ghanaian actors are inferior to their Nigerian counterparts.
His comments come amid criticism of veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo, who recently sparked controversy after questioning why some Ghanaian actors demand fees comparable to those of established Nigerian stars.
While some Ghanaians have condemned Kanayo’s comments as disrespectful to local actors, Parrot Mouth has defended the veteran actor, insisting that the criticism should instead be directed at LilWin.
“And for those Ghanaians dragging Kanayo that he had said rubbish, bow your heads in shame. You don’t have any right to talk to Kanayo,” he said.
According to Parrot Mouth, LilWin’s conduct after bringing several Nigerian actors to Ghana contributed to the impression that local actors were less valuable.
He claimed that LilWin’s public comments about the Nigerian stars, including the amount of money spent to bring them to Ghana, undermined the reputation of Ghanaian actors.
“LilWin, who brought Kanayo, is the problem of Ghana. Everything Kanayo said, is it true? Yes. Why is it true? Because LilWin made Ghanaians look cheap. LilWin made Ghanaian actors and actresses look useless in front of Kanayo O. Kanayo. Let’s call a spade a spade,” Parrot Mouth stated.
He further argued that LilWin’s comparisons between Ghanaian actors and the Nigerian stars sent the wrong message about the local film industry.
Parrot Mouth questioned why LilWin would publicly discuss the fees associated with Nigerian actors while suggesting that some Ghanaian actors were demanding similar amounts.
“What are you trying to say? That Ghanaians do not have anything? Then you further prove that by making another statement that the money some of your people want to take is the same amount as Kanayo, Mama G and the others. Some statements, you are washing your dirty linens outside,” he said.
He added that he fully supported Kanayo’s remarks, arguing that LilWin’s actions had contributed to the veteran actor’s perception of Ghanaian actors.
“I stand with anything Kanayo talked about because only you have disgraced your people,” Parrot Mouth stated.
Parrot Mouth also dismissed claims that Ghana’s movie industry is struggling simply because audience preferences have changed.
According to him, the industry is still viable, but certain actions by industry players are contributing to its decline.
“Later, they will say Ghana movie is dead, the industry is not dead. It’s people like you collapsing the industry, and that is the truth,” he added.
He noted that Nigerian movies continue to attract audiences because of their suspense, while Ghanaian productions are often discussed or revealed by bloggers before viewers get the chance to watch them.
