President John Dramani Mahama has said the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) generated US$10.8 billion for the country in 2025 through the regulation of small-scale gold exports.
He said the amount represented an almost 100 per cent increase over the US$4.66 billion recorded in 2024.
Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Mining in Motion Summit, President Mahama attributed the increase to measures introduced to regulate gold exports from the artisanal and small-scale mining sector.
He said Ghana exported 64 tonnes of gold from the sector in 2024, compared with 104 tonnes between April and December 2025, following the establishment of GoldBod in April that year.
“I am happy to note that in 2025 alone, through the regulation of small-scale gold exports, the Gold Board brought US$10.8 billion into the country,” he said.
President Mahama commended GoldBod for its contribution to the country’s gold sector, saying the government was working to retain more value from mineral resources through assaying, refining and related services.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to increase indigenous participation in the mining industry through a local content policy that seeks to transition mining companies from owner mining to contract mining by indigenous companies.
According to him, the policy is intended to expand opportunities for Ghanaian businesses and strengthen local participation in mining operations.
President Mahama, however, assured workers currently employed by operating gold mines that the transition to contract mining would not affect their remuneration or conditions of service.
He said the workers would continue to receive the same pay and enjoy the same conditions of service under the new arrangements.
The President stressed that Ghana’s mineral resources must contribute more directly to industrial development, job creation and improved living conditions.
He called for greater investment in local processing and manufacturing to ensure the country benefits beyond the export of raw mineral resources.
