A Development Economist, Dr. Frank Bannor, has expressed his disappointment in the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s leadership in Parliament stating that he is will go down in history as the most ‘incompetent speaker’ in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
Speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokroko” which was monitored by Angelonline.com.gh on November 11, 2024, Dr. Bannor argued that Bagbin’s actions and behavior will leave a lasting mark on the nation’s political archives, highlighting his ineffectiveness in the role.
According to Dr. Bannor, this is the first time he has witnessed a speaker who wants everything in Parliament to be built around him.
He recounted an incident where Bagbin ordered a clerk to remove a member from Parliament during a session simply because they disagreed with him.
“When you disagree with Alban Bagbin, he sees it as a personal conflict, even though we all know that agreeing and disagreeing are part of healthy conversation,” he stated.
Dr. Bannor emphasized that if Bagbin makes a statement that someone does not accept completely, it can lead to him being in a bad mood. He pointed out that with only a few days before President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s final address to Parliament, there are important transitional bills that need attention. However, he criticized Bagbin for focusing on his own interests rather than the implications of these legislative matters for Ghana.
He remarked, “Imagine the speaker being the President of the Republic of Ghana, a position that holds significant power. If someone with Bagbin’s attitude were in that role, we can only guess what the consequences would be for the nation.”
Dr. Bannor suggested that Bagbin’s time as Speaker has revealed his true intentions, allowing Ghanaians to see his leadership style up close. Despite his criticisms, he acknowledged that Bagbin’s time in this position has been instructive.
