Development and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. George Domfeh, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of causing the current increase in Ghana’s debt during his previous administration.

During a Zoom call on the ‘Yen Man Ghana Show’ on Angel Television on Saturday, 1st March 2025, he stated that the rise in Ghana’s debt was due to President Mahama’s actions and poor management of the economy.

According to him, the Minister of Finance’s website, in its Annual Debt Management Report (ADMR), clearly indicates that Mahama is responsible for the increase in Ghana’s debt.

Dr. George explained that during the late Jerry John Rawlings’ administration, a debt of GH¢ 7.1 billion was left. However, former President John Agyeman Kufuor left GH¢ 8 billion when he left office, compared to Mahama’s government, which left GH¢ 29 billion in debt at the end of his administration.

“The person who made our debt increase is President Mahama. As I’m talking to you, when you go to the Ministry of Finance’s website, there’s a paper called the Annual Debt Management Report (ADMR), which they publish every year. Rawlings left a debt of 7.1 billion when he left office, Kufuor left 8 billion, and Mills and Mahama’s administration increased our debt to 21 billion compared to Akufo-Addo’s 15 billion debt” he said.

He added that, John Mahama should not run from the debt he caused; however, he should not compare his previous debt to Akufo-Addo’s debt increase. Therefore, in his view, John Mahama is the cause of Ghana’s current GH¢ 44 billion debt.
