President Mahama pledges to construct Wa-Tumu-Bolgatanga trunk road

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to construct the Wa-Tumu-Bolgatanga trunk road, saying it is important for connecting communities and boosting economic activities in the northern part of the country.

Speaking during his Thank You Tour in Wa, the Upper West Regional capital on Thursday 15th May, 2025, the President said Cabinet will soon approve key projects under the Big Push infrastructure plan.

He mentioned that many of these projects will focus on roads, including the dualization of major highways such as the Accra-Kumasi, Accra-Takoradi, and Accra-Aflao roads.

He also revealed that his government will work on major bridges like the Dambai Bridge, and the rehabilitation of the Buipe, Daboya, and Yapei bridges.

“Cabinet will soon approve priority projects under The Big Push infrastructure program, understandably, a significant number of this priority projects will be will be in the road sector”

“This includes the dualization of major highways, including the Accra-Kumasi, Accra-Takoradi, and Accra-Aflao roads. We will also tackle major bridges such as the Dambai Bridge, and the rehabilitation of the Buipe Bridge, Daboya Bridge, and Yapei Bridges.”

He emphasized that they will prioritize the Wa-Tumu-Bolgatanga trunk road and the Techiman-Wenchi-Bole-Wa-Hamile corridor.

He added that parts of the Sawla-Fufulso road will also be resurfaced to improve transport between the Upper West, Savannah, and Northern Regions.

“In this region, under the Big Push, we are prioritizing the Wa-Tumu-Bolgatanga trunk road and the Techiman-Wenchi-Bole-Wa-Hamile corridor.”

“The Sawla-Fufulso road will also be resurfaced to improve connectivity between the Upper West, and the Savannah and Northern regions.”

The President added, “We are also designing a new expressway between Accra and Kumasi, which will reduce the travel time between the two largest cities in Ghana to about two and a half hours.”

He further stated that work will begin very soon on the road in the next few months because money has been provided in the budget.

He added that GHC 14 billion has been set aside for the Big Push.

He stated that the Minister for Finance has assured him that all contractors will receive 15% mobilization to enable them to move to site.

He said the Minister has also assured him that any contractor under the Big Push project who presents their certificates for payment will be paid within two weeks.

He said no contractor will have any excuse to say they have not been paid.
