Bawumia’s comments on Wontumi’s arrest highly hypocritical – Chris Dugan

A Government Spokesperson  Chris Dugan, has described comments  made by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia regarding the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Benard Antwi Boasiako, as highly hypocritical.

In reference to Dr. Bawumia’s expression of concern over the arrest and continued detention of Boasiako, Mr. Dugan asserted that the previous NPP regime exhibited a blatant disregard for human rights.

He contended that Ghanaians were mistreated during Dr. Bawumia’s time in office, yet he failed to take any action against such injustices.

Mr. Dugan emphasised that Dr. Bawumia must not speak about upholding the rights of the people simply because a member of his party has found himself in legal trouble.

“Dr. Bawumia’s speech is highly hypocritical; people were shot, slapped, and intimidated under the government of Dr. Bawumia; he should stop talking about human rights because he could not foster peace during his tenure,” he stated.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Thursday, 29 May 2025, he recalled the incident when the Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, was forcibly removed from his home, leaving his wife and children traumatized.

“Ghanaians have truly suffered at the hands of the NPP; we intend to hold them accountable through the rule of law,” he emphasised.

Mr. Dugan further clarified that the NDC harbours no animosity towards the NPP, nor do they intend to intimidate Chairman Wontumi. He asserted that they are merely applying “The Rule of Law” to seek justice.

“Nobody is intimidating anyone; the rule of law means the law must operate. Has anyone shot someone? So where is the intimidation?” he queried.

He then admonished Chairman Wontumi for the arrogant lifestyle he exhibited while his party was in power, claiming that Wontumi engaged in illegal mining and caused significant harm. He described Wontumi as cowardly for yielding to the pressures of his arrest.

“All Chairman Wontumi did at first was make noise; I have now seen that he is not man enough.

“He should stop crying and urinating on himself; he is not the first person to be arrested. NPP members are cowards; they pretend to be ill when they get arrested,” he remarked.
