Ahead of the all-important Akwatia by-election, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, July 2025, launched its Constituency Delegates Conference and Campaign Launch at Boadua in the constituency.

Held at the Boadua Presbyterian Church in the Denkyembour District, the event was also used to unveil the party’s selected candidate for the by-election, Solomon Kwame Asumadu.

The conference was held under the theme: “Winning Together in Honour of Hon. Ernest Yaw Kumi” – aimed at fostering unity within the party to work assiduously toward securing the parliamentary seat in honor of the late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

The event drew some key figures of the party, including National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, better known as Nana B; Atiwa East Member of Parliament Abena Osei Asare; MP for Akuapem North Sammy Awuku; Eastern Regional Party Chairman Jeff Konadu; former Akwatia MP Mercy Adu Gyamfi [Ama Sey], among others.

Addressing party faithful, MP for Atiwa East, Abena Osei Asare, urged the people to go out in large numbers on the due day to vote massively for Solomon Kwame Asumadu, to demonstrate to the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) that Akwatia is a no-go area for them.

She indicated that retaining the seat would not only prove their supremacy over the NDC in the area but also enable them to maintain their 88 seats in Parliament.

The MP emphasized the importance of unity and hard work within the party to reclaim power in the next general election, as she expressed confidence in the NPP’s ability to transform the lives of Ghanaians:

“NPP is the only hope for Ghanaians because they have realized that NDC has deceived them, and it is our party that can help shape their standard of living.

“So, therefore, we don’t want our numbers to decrease. We need Asumado to join us in Parliament and work hard to bring back the NPP to power in 2028 and change the fortunes of this country,” added Abena Osei Asare.

On his part, National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to ensure that punitive measures are put in place to avoid chaos during the by-election, unlike the recent Ablekuma North by-election.

He stressed that the brutality that marred the Ablekuma North by-election cannot be repeated in Akwatia, warning that they would resort to self-protection if the police failed to act.

The by-election for the Akwatia Constituency will be held on September 2.
