The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has secured the arrest and conviction of 18 individuals within 48 hours for illegal dumping of refuse in the metropolis.

This development forms part of the Assembly’s intensified crackdown on indiscriminate waste disposal.

Suspects, Atta Gyamfi, Manuna Ishawu, Veronica Maako, Mariama Iddrisu, Kwadwo Amuzu, and Ebenezer Atakorah were apprehended by KMA’s Metropolitan Guards at the Otumfuo Roundabout in Kejetia on Monday, May 11, 2026.

They were swiftly arraigned before court for prosecution under the Assembly’s Sanitation Bye-Laws.

Barely a day later, 12 more offenders were convicted by the Prempeh Assembly District Court One, presided over by His Worship Kwaku Ansah Akrofi.

The offenders, arrested at MTN Roundabout, Otumfuo Roundabout, WAEC, and opposite the Zoo between May 11 and 12, pleaded guilty to offences under Section 56(a & b) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).

Each was fined 100 penalty units (GHS 1,200.00) or risked a 14-day prison sentence in default, and were bound over to be of good behaviour for six months.

One offender, 18-year-old Kadija Dramani, received leniency due to her age and status as a stranger, and was fined 40 penalty units (GHS 480.00).

KMA Prosecutor, Enock Nkansah, emphasized that the Assembly remains resolute in enforcing sanitation laws to keep Kumasi clean and healthy.

The Assembly has cautioned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, warning that offenders will continue to face the full rigours of the law.
