Privileges Committee must haul Afenyo-Markin to answer questions – Godwin Ayaba

The Corporate Affairs Officer at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Godwin Ayaba Mahama, has urged Parliament’s Privileges Committee to summon Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to answer questions over his criticism of a High Court judge.

Mr. Ayaba believes that the Minority Leader’s actions went overboard.

Speaking on Angel FM’s ‘Anɔpa Bofoɔ’ on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, Mr. Ayaba stressed that while lawyers and politicians may critique judicial decisions, the choice of words is critical.

He questioned whether Afenyo-Markin had forgotten the era of his own government when court cases were taken to judges in the morning and panelled in the evening.

He added that it is not the first time an offender has been denied bail in such circumstances.

Mr. Ayaba described Afenyo-Markin’s remarks against the High Court judge as unacceptable, particularly amid the detention of Abronye by the ruling government.

He argued that the Minority Leader’s senior position requires him to demonstrate restraint and respect for judicial authority.

Afenyo-Markin insists he has ‘ethical, constitutional rights to call out judges who disrespect the law’

“Afenyo-Markin is not an ordinary member of Parliament; he must therefore exhibit good conduct. The court should even cite him for contempt,” Mr. Ayaba declared.

He reiterated that the Privileges Committee must act swiftly to hold Afenyo-Markin accountable.

He argued that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not have the moral right to comment because the “Rambo-style” arrests did not begin during John Mahama’s era but, under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.
