The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Biosafety Authority (NBA), Kwame Dei Asamoah Okyere, has assured Ghanaians that the Authority is working to prevent unsafe products from entering the country’s market.

Speaking at the launch of Ghana’s Fifth National Report on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety at the University of Ghana Atomic Campus in Dome-Kwabenya, Mr. Okyere said the NBA is the regulator responsible for assessing new consumable products entering Ghana.

He explained that the Authority ensures such products are safe for human consumption and for the environment.

He said the NBA’s mission and vision are to protect public health and the environment, while positioning Ghana as a regulatory hub for biotechnology, biosafety, and biosecurity in Africa.

Mr. Okyere further noted that the Authority evaluates the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), including plants, animals, and microorganisms.

He stressed that Ghana has moved from merely drafting a biosafety framework on paper to operationalizing a functional system that safeguards health and the environment, while also attracting investment into the biotechnology sector.

He urged Ghanaians to trust the NBA, assuring that the Authority exists to protect their interests and ensure a safe and sustainable future.
