Ghanaian musician Ras Kuuku, has expressed concern over the widespread use of insults on TikTok, saying he wishes the Twi language was banned on the platform because of how frequently it is used to verbally abuse others.
Speaking during an interview, the musician lamented that many users, including elderly people, have turned TikTok into a space for exchanging insults instead of sharing meaningful or educational content.
According to Ras Kuuku, the nature of insults delivered in Twi makes them more intense and difficult to translate into English.
“Because to translate insult to English will be difficult, because the insult is too much on there. You’ll see an elderly person insulting someone meanwhile you can use it to educate the young ones,” he said.
He argued that if users communicated primarily in English, the level of abusive language on the platform would be significantly reduced.
“If we were to speak English throughout, the insult will limit,” he added.
