The National Security Coordinator has urged various security councils across the country to be on high alert in anticipation of violence.

The warning precedes Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development’s announcement of nominees confirmed to head various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), scheduled for Sunday, 19 September 2021.

The National Security, mindful of the processes, urged the Regional (REGSEC), Municipal (MUSEC) and District (DISEC) Security Councils to ensure that the peace of the country is protected at the declaration of the list of confirmed nominees.

“There are indications of possible clashes ahead of the announcement of MMDCEs in parts of the country. REGSEC, MUSEC and DISEC are hereby urged to be on high alert to pre-empt breach of peace in the respective areas,” a wirelessmmessage signed and issued on September 16, 2021, by the National Security Coordinator has said.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at press conference on September 17, 2021 concerning the anticipated announcement, urged all party members to tolerate whoever is chosen to head their assemblies.

The Communications Director of the party, Yaw Buaben Asamoa who spoke to the press, said: “We urge everybody to be calm and to act in ways that promote good relations at a working level in order to give the nominees the best possible opportunity to work in the interest of the grassroots of the nation.

He added in his plea: “Now that the selection process is over, we urge all former contestants and stakeholders to adopt the nominees as their own, encourage smooth confirmation processes, and support approved MMDCEs to deliver the best to their areas. Once the list is published, competition in any form, ought to end.”
