The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that it has adopted measures to “close in on armed robbers” who undertake operations within prone areas in the country.

According to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwesi Ofori, the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akufo Dampare, has conferred with Regional and Divisional Commanders from Tema and Accra and have devised plans to suppress the actions of the criminals.

“We are going to adopt targeting approach, and whatever we will do to apprehend them we will do within the remit of the law…We have identified the class of people who are perpetrating such crimes and we will put every measure in place to apprehend them” he stated on the Anopa Bↄfoↄ morning show with Kwamena Sam Biney.

His comments come on the back of recent daylight robberies parts of Greater Accra have experienced; the first incident occurring on September 20 at Achimota involving a woman who had gone to withdraw money from a bank at Abeka, and was believed to have been trailed by three motor bikes to a traffic intercession where she was robbed.

The second occurring near a bank at Kwashiman on September 22, involving a man who had also gone to make some withdrawals from the bank; third, a woman who was robbed at gun point of an amount of GH₵29000 and fourth being recorded on Friday at Sampa Valley near the Weija Barrier, involving a man.

But Mr. Kwesi Ofori noted that their patrol team including the Motor Assault Team, Road Patrol Teams among others have been, with immediate effect, deployed to fight the crimes on the streets, adding that there will be “static ones [officers] at the major intercessions” to control the area.

He however urged the public to help in combating the crimes by informing the nearest police station or the national office on their hideouts, since the perpetrators have a dwelling place within the communities.
