Ghana’s pursuit for Eddie Nketiah hit a snag after the arsenal striker was included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man England squad to face Ukraine in the Euro 2024 qualifiers and 150th-anniversary heritage match against Scotland on 9th and 12 September 2023.

Ghana Football Association has been in contact with Eddie Nketiah and Cullum Hudson Odoi who have Ghanaian roots to convince them to switch their nationality to represent the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup but was unsuccessful. A few weeks back Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton on Talk Sports in England disclosed that Ghana hasn’t given up on the duo and still hopes they will change their minds and represent the country.

Southgate however has included the 23-year-old as part of the 9 attackers for the upcoming games next month.

“It’s an area that we would like to have a look at him. He’s a young player with really good pedigree, very good finisher and it’s good for him to have some time with us. He’s the record goalscorer with the U21s,” Gareth Southgate on calling up Nketiah.

Ghana has been successful in convincing players like Kevin-Prince Boateng, Inaki Williams, Kofi Kyereh, Elisha Owusu, Dennis Odoi, etc. in the past but will have to look elsewhere because it appears Eddie Nketiah won’t come and play for the Black stars.
