Akufo-Addo directs $5m out of $6m Maxam fine to Appiati victims

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed that $5 million of the total $6 million fine imposed on the Maxam Ghana Limited, should be donated to the victims of the Appiati Support Fund.

According to the order, the move will help support the victims and to enable the government reconstruct the community.

The directive comes after an administrative fine of One Million United State Dollars (US$1,000,000.00) was imposed on the mining firm for regulatory breaches following an explosion which occurred on Thursday January 20, 2022, when a truck carrying explosives from Maxam’s Iduapriem plant in Tarkwa to Chirano Gold Mines Ltd, was involved in a crash, leading to the death of thirteen (13) people and the destruction of the entire Appiatse community.

In a statement, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, indicated that as backed by law, the (US$1,000,000.00) forms part of the Internally Generated Funds (IGF) of the Minerals Commission regulatory of the sector hence the President decision.

“The President has therefore directed that the additional Five Million Dollars (US$5,000,000.00), to be paid by Maxam to Government, be donated to the Appiati Support Fund to support the reconstruction of the community.”

The statement further urged the Minerals Commission to ensure that the said Five Million Dollars (US$5,000,000.00) is paid in accordance with the agreed terms of payment.
