A Communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwaku Owusu Banahene, has wondered why the President, Nana Akufo-Addo will turn a deafening ear to the galamsey menace in the country.

Mr. Owusu expressed worry about how the President has refused to implement strict actions that will aid the fight against the illegal practice that is causing damage to water bodies and the forests.

He is to that effect, proposing that President Akufo-Addo and his appointees are forced to consistently drink from the water bodies being destroyed by the illegal mining.

“In my opinion, I suggest that we should be providing water from the destroyed water bodies through galamsey activities each day and give it to President Akufo-Addo and his appointees to drink.

“And I believe when they are forced to drink from the river Pra, Ankobra and end up contracting diseases, and begin treating themselves with the stolen state funds, they will start realizing the complaints of the people of the consequences of the galamsey activities,” he told Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah.

Mr. Banahene who was speaking on the Angel Morning Show, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, added that his uttermost disappointment in the President comes on the back of his refusal to resign as stateman despite putting his presidency on the line in 2016 if he failed in the fight against galamsey.

He believes appointees of the President’s administration cannot be left out when discussing the subject. According to him, attitudes of majority of these appointees tell their direct involvement in the practice.

The NDC communications team member, however, shared the view that the country could achieve its mission and vision of the galamsey if the president ought to exercise its powers.

“If President Akufo-Addo insists that he is going to eradicate the galamsey practice, he can achieve that instantly in just a day.”
