There was drama in court on Thursday, November 6, 2025, when a 35-year-old Nigerian national, Gift Chinyere Aminu, could not fathom why she is in court for trafficking young girls from Nigeria to Ghana to engage in prostitution.

Chinyere, who has been charged with conspiracy and human trafficking, claimed she is not the one who brought the young girls from Nigeria through Togo to Ghana and does not know why she has to stand trial.

She told the court the girls, prior to arrival in Ghana, were already into prostitution in Nigeria and told her they needed help as their living conditions in their home country were very poor and requested her assistance to come to Ghana.

She pleaded not guilty to a count of conspiracy and two counts of human trafficking.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Issah Achiburi said, the complainant in the case is Thank God Thelma, a Nigeria residing in Accra, while the accused persons are Gift Chinyere, 35, residing at Kwame Nkrumah Circle railways and two accomplices on the run- Jennifer and Blessing- who are also Nigerians.

He said, personnel from the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Police CID on October 31, 2025, received a phone call from Jennifer Izi aka Lovina that, a certain Nigerian lady had brought her and her friend; Aissah Mohammed aka Gold from Togo to Ghana and forced them into prostitution and that the woman subjected them to severe beatings when they failed to engage in prostitution.

Upon the receipt of the case, Gift was arrested and during interrogation admitted knowing both victims.

She told police that she worked and stayed in Rafineri a suburb in Lome Togo where she was engaging in prostitution. While there she received both victims from Jennifer and Blessing to engage them as prostitutes, manage and collect the proceeds from them which was to be sent to them.

After receiving the victims Gift took them to a shrine and made them swear an oath that should they run away with her money they would run mad. She allegedly collected the sum of 300,000.00 Naira from Aissah and 250,000.00 Naira from Jennifer.

However, a Togolese police operation forced Gift to relocate to Ghana together with the victims and still forced them into the trade at Kwame Nkrumah Circle. In Ghana Jennifer Izi aka Lovina realised that she was pregnant and informed Gift whom she said gave her medicine to cause an abortion.

ASP Issah said they were still investigating the case and also trying their best to apprehend the other two on the run- Jennifer and Blessing. He pleaded with the court to remand the accused person because she has no permanent place of abode.

The trial judge, Susana Eduful remanded her into police custody until the final determination of the case as it is not likely she would stand trial if granted bail. The case has been adjourned to November, 19.
