Ghanaian actress Portia Asare has shared a deeply personal account of the challenges she faced in her previous marriage, revealing how the experience affected her emotionally and mentally.
In a video posted on her YouTube channel, Portia recounted moments she described as some of the most difficult periods in her life.
According to her, there were times when her emotional state was misunderstood, leading to tense situations at home.
She explained that her former husband once called the police during a moment when she was struggling, a situation she says could have been avoided if he had taken time to understand what she was going through.
“There was a moment when I was emotionally overwhelmed, and instead of checking on my wellbeing, my husband involved the police because he believed I was a threat,” she said.
Portia revealed that she battled severe emotional distress during the marriage, and a hospital visit later confirmed she was dealing with depression.
Despite trying to appear strong in public, she says she felt isolated and had no close confidant to share her experiences with.
“I was struggling emotionally on many levels. Even when the hospital confirmed what I was going through, I felt like I was carrying it alone. I tried to appear fine to everyone, but inside I felt empty, with no one I could open up to,” she added.
The actress also addressed rumours that circulated after her marriage ended, including accusations that she had been unfaithful. She stressed that the claims were false but still caused her significant pain.
“People began posting hurtful comments about me on social media, accusing me of cheating on my husband with my manager and claiming that was why my marriage failed,” she said.
“I faced insults and harsh criticism online, but it was through the support of some men and women of God that I found strength,” she added.
According to Portia, support from trusted spiritual leaders and mentors helped her recover and regain stability during that season of her life.
“It was with the support of some men and women of God that I was able to get through it,” she stated.
She concluded by encouraging anyone experiencing similar emotional or marital challenges to speak up and seek help rather than enduring difficulties alone.
