The Economic Community Of West Afrifan States’s (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the sole West Africa candidate for the African Union (AU) Chairperson position, when the rotating chairmanship returns to West Africa in 2027.
The decision was reached on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the Council’s meeting in Abuja, Nigeria.
According to a statement posted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on his Facebook page on Friday, December12, the Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to adopt the declaration this Sunday, December 14, formally sealing the nomination.
In his post, Mr. Ablakwa expressed gratitude to fellow ministers, noting that “Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.”
He added that “Ghana shall keep making Africa proud” as the country moves forward with the nomination.
