The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have joined the Ghanaian football community to mourn the tragic loss of a Premier League player who lost his life in a robbery attack over the weekend.

The victim, Dominic Frimpong, a Berekum Chelsea FC player, died after sustaining a gunshot wound following the robbery attack on Sunday night when the team was returning from a 1-0 loss in a league game to FC Samartex.

The passing of the young, talented player has sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian football community.

In a separate statement, the Presidents of FIFA and CAF, Gianni Infantino and Patrice Motsepe, extended condolences on behalf of the global and African football communities to the family, friends, and Berekum Chelsea FC following the tragic incident.

According to Mr. Infantino, while he is personally saddened by the tragedy, all at FIFA are also affected by the incident.

“On behalf of the global football community and everyone at FIFA, we send our condolences to his family, friends, everyone at Berekum Chelsea FC, and all those who knew him,” the FIFA boss said in a message to the Ghana Football Association.

CAF, for their part, President Patrice Motsepe conveyed his deep sorrow over the devastating loss.

“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the armed robbery attack on the bus of Berekum Chelsea, returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture, which claimed the life of a 20-year-old winger, Dominic Frimpong.”

The CAF President went on to express condolences on behalf of both himself and the continental football body, recognizing the pain felt by all those connected to the young player.

“Please pass my personal and CAF’s deepest condolences to the family, friends, and teammates of Dominic Frimpong and to the Ghana Football Association.”

Dr. Motsepe also offered prayers and support to the bereaved and the wider Ghanaian football community, stating that “May God comfort and console his loved ones and the entire Ghanaian football community. CAF is with you during this sad and painful period.”

The Football Association acknowledged the condolences from both FIFA and CAF, noting that it remains in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as investigations continue to arrest the perpetrators.
