The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has engaged the World Bank and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening social protection systems during a courtesy call by Mr. Robert S. Chase.
Mr. Chase, the World Bank’s Social Policy Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, is in Ghana as part of efforts to deepen collaboration and support the country’s social protection agenda.
The meeting focused on advancing cooperation between the Government and the World Bank, particularly in implementing key interventions under the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project 2, including the LEAP cash transfer and technical support to the Ghana School Feeding Programme, among other social protection initiatives.
The Minister highlighted the impact of programmes such as the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty, noting that the Government is expanding beneficiary households from 350,000 to 400,000 to reach more vulnerable populations.
She emphasised the need for stronger partnerships, including private sector involvement, and assured that measures are being put in place to ensure a smooth transition for beneficiaries exiting social intervention programmes.
The Minister also pointed to key legislative progress including the Social Protection Act and the Affirmative Action Act, aimed at strengthening coordination within the sector.
Mr. Chase, on his part, reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s efforts, particularly in directing resources to improve the lives of vulnerable groups.
