Cease the hostile actions towards health workers or face our wrath – GMA warns Health Minister

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has warned the Minister of Health, Kwamena Mintah Akandoh, to desist from what they described as “hostile and confrontational actions” against its members.

According to the Council, the minister’s action is culminating in a bad precedent by directly and indirectly inciting the public against health workers.

In a June 6, 2026, statement, it added that these have been associated with increasing general demotivation of health professionals and incidents of violence against health workers.

“We call on the Minister to cease these hostile and confrontational actions,” It warned.

The Council, however, advised Mr. Akandoh to channel his energy into engaging constructively to ensure improved morale and the continued support of health workers towards achieving objectives of the sector.

“If such acts continue, the Association and its members will have no choice but to take remedial actions to ensure the sector does not degenerate into chaos,” GMA stated, and expressed its utmost displeasure at the minister.

This was contained in a statement demanding the reinstatement of the suspended Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, after directives from the minister.

The statement co-signed by GMA’s President and General Secretary, Prof. Dr.(Med) Ernest Yorke and Dr.(Dent) Richard Selormey, further entreated its members to stay calm as they explore effective ways of achieving a lasting resolution of the issues.

It pledged to reconvene in the coming weeks to “decide on our next actions and communicate accordingly.”
