The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has demanded the immediate reinstatement of the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, following the directives of the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

The Association described the minister’s suspension directive as one “without basis.”

In a statement dated June 6, 2026, co-signed by GMA President, Prof. Dr. (Med) Ernest Yorke, and General Secretary, Dr. (Dent) Richard Selormey, stated that they are in solidarity with health workers at KATH to lay down their tools until the suspension is withdrawn.

“The GMA calls for its immediate withdrawal and reinstatement of the Chief Executive Officer within three (3) working days. The GMA expresses full support for the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association’s decision to stand down services until the suspension is withdrawn and necessary measures are implemented to improve emergency capacity in the Kumasi enclave,” It added.

According to the statement, their reinstatement call was reached at an emergency meeting by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Association on Saturday, June 6, to deliberate on the matter.

It also defended the actions taken by KATH management during the recent congestion crisis at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre, describing it as standard practice.

“The NEC observed that the actions taken by the management of KATH were in line with professional and administrative standards, aimed at ensuring patient safety and responsible healthcare leadership.”

GMA further dismissed claims that the hospital had abandoned patients or disregarded directives from President John Dramani Mahama but maintained that the temporary redirection of patients was a necessary intervention to ensure safe and timely medical care.

“The actions taken did not turn away patients to their fate or flout the President’s directive but rather redirected patients and ensured they received safe and timely care at nearby hospitals with support from specialists from KATH.”

It urged members to remain calm while the Council explores effective resolutions and monitors developments.
