The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has signed an off-taker agreement with MES Logistics as part of government’s renewed push to revitalise Ghana’s railway sector and improve freight movement across the country.
Speaking to the media after the signing, Bukari Nikpe said the partnership will allow cargo to be moved by rail instead of relying solely on trucks.
According to him, the move is expected to decongest Ghana’s ports and major highways, reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and help cut down road accidents involving heavy-duty trucks.
The Minister added that government’s investment in two new locomotives and 20 wagons is a strategic economic decision.
He noted that the equipment will support industrial growth and generate sustainable revenue for the railway sector through efficient operations and proper maintenance.
Nikpe said the government is committed to transforming the railway industry into a key driver of economic growth, trade facilitation and national development.
He urged the Ghana Railway Development Authority and its partners to manage the new assets prudently to ensure operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and the continued expansion of rail services nationwide.
