Member of Parliament (MP) for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng, has formally petitioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Secretariat to sanction Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie, MP for Effiduase-Asokore, over allegations of misconduct in the selection of a parliamentary candidate for Obuasi West Constituency.
In a letter dated July 12, 2026 and addressed to the NPP General Secretary, Mr. Kwarteng accused Dr. Afriyie of campaigning for and supporting an independent candidate against the party’s officially sponsored candidate in the 2024 general elections. Mr. Kwarteng, who was also the Campaign Manager for the Obuasi West campaign in 2024, said Dr. Afriyie’s actions violated Articles 3 and 4 of the NPP Constitution.
According to the petition, the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee issued a recommendation on 6th July, 2025, to uphold the candidacy of Joseph Kojo Appiah as the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Obuasi West.
The decision followed an appeal by Mr. Appiah after the Regional Appeals Committee, chaired by Ben Kwame Aidoo-Awuku, had earlier nullified his position. Mr.
Kwarteng stated that the petition seeks “sanctions against Dr Nana Ayew Afriyie for misconduct, and for reversal of the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee’s Recommendation on the Obuasi West Constituency Election.”
Mr. Kwarteng outlined four main grounds for his complaint. He said no party organ authorized Dr. Afriyie to sponsor or support an independent candidate.
He also argued that the Regional Executive Committee’s recommendation treated claims that he authorized Dr. Afriyie as fact, without any inquiry or verification.
He further stated that supporting an independent candidate amounts to bringing the name of the party into disrepute, which the Constitution frowns upon, and that allowing such conduct would send a wrong signal to party members and harm the NPP ahead of the 2028 general election. “Even if such authorization was given, it would itself be unconstitutional and contrary to the Party Constitution… An independent candidate against the Party’s officially sponsored candidate,” the petition stated.
Mr. Kwarteng is asking the National Appeals Committee and the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee to sanction Dr. Afriyie under Article 4 of the Party Constitution, including reprimand, suspension, or disqualification from holding office within the party for a stated period.
He is also seeking the reinstatement of the Regional Recommendation that named Joseph Kojo Appiah as the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Obuasi West. He requested an acknowledgment of receipt of the petition and a timeline for its determination.
