Businessman and philanthropist Alhaji Seidu Agongo has donated relief items valued at GHC1.45 million to victims of the June floods in Accra.

The donation, presented over the weekend, targeted residents in Mamobi, Nima (Beline Bridge), Alajo Assemblies of God, Alajo Central and North, Quay Mensah, and Kaneshie Station: Communities that suffered extensive damage to homes and livelihoods.

The relief items included bags of rice, cartons of tomato paste, tins of milk, and bales of cloth.

Speaking during the presentation at Mamobi, Alhaji Agongo said the gesture was aimed at providing immediate support to affected families and to encourage other members of the business community to assist.

“It is disheartening to see the entire burden of this calamity resting squarely on the government’s shoulders.

“We rise together, or we do not rise at all. We cannot afford to be mere spectators while our brothers and sisters suffer,” he said.

Alhaji Agongo said the donation forms part of his long-standing commitment to philanthropy.

He noted that over the years he has supported education and healthcare initiatives across the country, including the construction and renovation of schools, payment of school fees for underprivileged students, and settlement of medical bills for vulnerable patients.

“As a Muslim, my faith teaches me that service to mankind is service to Allah,” he stated. “For us, giving is not a choice; it is a duty.”

The philanthropist also called on state agencies to enforce regulations on waste disposal, prevent construction on waterways, and undertake regular desilting of drains to address perennial flooding in Accra.

He said Ghana, nearly 70 years after independence, should not continue to experience the same flooding challenges annually, and urged a nonpartisan approach to finding lasting solutions.

“Implementing the right measures may appear harsh at the beginning, but leadership needs to take the bull by the horns,” he said.
