The Minority Caucus in Parliament has rejected calls by the police to use alternative routes for its planned protest against the governor of the Bank of Ghana.

The group, in Angelonline.com.gh’s earlier publication, set September 5, 2023, as the date for the planned protest against the governor of the Bank of Ghana and its deputies.

They proposed to converge in front of Parliament, and then march through some principal streets in the capital and end at the Bank of Ghana.

However, the Police administration asked the Minority to change routes selected for their demonstration against the Bank of Ghana Governor and his deputies slated for next month.

According to the Police, they are ready to provide the demonstrators with security, but an assessment of the minority’s selected routes proves a possible danger to public safety and order.

It follows a meeting held on Wednesday, August 23, between the law enforcement agency and the minority over the latter’s proposed routes for the coming exercise.

But in a twist of event, the minority leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, in a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Police Command, has rejected the police proposals for them to use alternative routes.

According to the minority, the police’s justification of a “security zone” as a pretext, was deemed disconcerting, particularly in light of the Ghana Police Service’s motto of Service with integrity.

“Your attempt to deny us an opportunity to terminate our #OccupyBoG protest at the Headquarters of the Bank of Ghana on the pretext that it is a “security zone” is untenable, troubling and unwholesome for the Ghana Police Service’s motto of Service with Integrity.

“How is the Bank of Ghana Headquarters designated by the Police as a security zone and the Cedi House, another Bank of Ghana edifice that the Police proposed that we march through not a security zone?” the minority questioned.

The minority also insinuated they are tempted to believe that the police action is a calculated scheme to prevent them from carrying out the planned exercise.

“I do not want to believe that you are citing or hiding behind “security zone” to thwart our planned protest and for the Police to shirk its constitutional duty of providing security for persons who desire to publicly manifest their revulsion and abhorrence at the central bank’s reckless management.”

On this count, the minority insists on using their original route for the protest and are, thus, urging the Police to prepare since they’ve given them reasonable notice.
