The Central Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akufo Dampare, to call his men at the Winneba Command to order.
In a petition sighted by Angelonline, the NDC accused the police command at Winneba of being unprofessional in discharging their duties.
They singled out the Divisional Police Commander, ACP Jeffrey Darko, and described his posture in handling matters as “selective justice” and “unfair treatment.”
This comes over recent tension between the NDC and NPP in the Efutu Constituency, over billboards destruction of both parties’ Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates.
The NDC parliamentary and presidential candidates’ billboards, belonging to Dr. James Kofi Annan and John Dramani Mahama respectively, were destroyed at the Winneba Junction roundabout last Thursday.
In retaliation, NDC members also destroyed NPP billboards at the same spot. However, police officers were deployed to protect the remaining NPP billboards, sparking outrage among NDC grassroots members.
Party leaders and the Winneba Divisional Police Command struggled to calm down and restrain the agitated youth from further retaliation.
The petition signed by Gabriella Tetteh, the Central Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, noted that ACP Jeffrey Darko should be seen pushing the interest of all persons in Effutu without favor to ease tensions and ensure peace and tranquility ahead of the December 7 elections.
“His selective justice and intimidation of our members has reached a crescendo where we will no longer sit back and watch gleefully while he goes on an intimidation spree under the orders of MP Afenyo Markins and the MCE.
“Just a fortnight ago, ACP Darko despite reports from our PC and party members about the destruction
to our party billboards chose to provide security to MP Afenyo’s billboards and looked on whenever the billboards of our Flagbearer and PC are destroyed by the MCEs thugs,” it contained.
It further expressed gross disaffection with the handling of the matter by the Divisional Commander, ACP Jeffery Darko, and called on the IGP for immediate intervention since they could no longer bear the intimidation.
“This intimidation will not be tolerated any longer, and so we wish to serve notice to the IGP Dr. Dampare that we, the NDC in the Central Region, will no longer sit back and watch on while our billboards and posters are destroyed,” Portion of the petition said.
