President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to improving teachers welfare, announcing a GH¢ 500 million budgetary allocation to establish a revolving housing fund in partnership GNAT and accompanied by Republic Bank.
Speaking at the 7th Quadrennial and 54th National Delegates Conference of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President Mahama noted that the government has fulfilled it promise by allocating lump sum in the budget to support a housing scheme for teachers.
Mr. President announced that “ this year the Minister of Finance has put GH¢ 500 million cedis in the budgets that money is going to be paid into a housing fund, GNAT will put some money in and republican bank will put some money in and teachers will apply and the houses will be built in the area that you want.”
Speaking at the conference, he stressed that the modalities for the housing scheme will work out this year and next year, ¢1 billion will be put in the housing fund.
He further highlighted that this collaboration aimed at improving the teachers living standards strengthening teacher retention particularly in rural areas and ensuring those who educate the nation live with dignity and security.
