President John Dramani Mahama has announced the start of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project and unveiled a $30.8 billion budget for the 2026 Big Push program aimed at boosting infrastructure and key sectors.
The program will receive $30.8 billion, building on last year’s investment of over $13 billion.
The funding will support improvements in roads, rail, aviation, health, education, agribusiness, and manufacturing.
During his address at the University of Ghana’s 77th Annual New Year School and Conference, President Mahama highlighted the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as a key project, citing severe traffic congestion between Ghana’s two largest cities.
He noted that a single church convention brought the route to a standstill for over seven hours during the New Year.
President Mahama further unveiled the launch of a task force to begin demarcation and design of the Green Digital City, a new urban project spanning Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta regions, aimed at decongesting the capital.
The city will house some government offices and key institutions, easing congestion in Accra, but will not replace Accra as the capital.
