Teacher unions have suspended their nationwide strike after reaching an agreement with government on outstanding issues regarding promotions and allowances.
According to the Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Dr George Smith-Graham, the two parties have signed modalities to guide the settlement of the concerns raised by the teachers.
He disclosed that as part of the deal, 52,000 teachers who have been promoted will have their salaries adjusted and paid by October 16, 2026.
Dr Smith-Graham added that all other promoted teachers not captured in the first batch will receive their adjusted salaries by the end of October 2026.
He further stated that payments under the collective agreement will commence in January 2027, with new allowances for teachers also captured in the agreement.
Meanwhile, leadership of the teacher unions has directed members to return to the classroom on Monday, October 12, following the suspension of the strike, which had disrupted academic activities over delays in promotion placements, salary adjustments and unpaid allowances.
Both government and the teacher unions have expressed commitment to ensuring that the agreed timelines are adhered to in order to prevent further disruptions to the academic calendar.
