The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana National Gas Company, Ms. Judith Adjobah Blay, has announced that the company will take a Final Investment Decision by the end of the year for the construction of a 278-kilometre onshore high-pressure pipeline from Atuabo to Tema.
She made the announcement at the Ghana Gas Media Soiree 2026, which brought together journalists from across the country and the Western Regional Minister.
Ms. Blay said the 20-inch pipeline will run from the Takoradi Distribution Station at Atuabo to Tema, traversing the Western, Central, Eastern and Greater Accra regions.
According to her, the pipeline will enable Ghana to transmit gas from the west to the east using its own infrastructure, instead of relying on the West African Gas Pipeline through a reverse flow arrangement.
“As a country, we are thinking ahead. West African Gas Pipeline has a different tariff from our tariff. It tends to be much more expensive. If we build this pipeline, as a country, we’ll have our own pipeline. We are going to control our own destiny when it comes to gas transmission,” she said.

She said the West African Gas Pipeline contract is expected to expire around 2038/2039.
Ms. Blay explained that the onshore pipeline will also create jobs during construction and open up opportunities for industries along the route, as lateral pipelines can be built to supply factories that want to use natural gas.
She said the project forms part of the company’s expansion drive, which also includes the procurement of a third compressor to improve operational efficiency and prevent plant shutdowns that affect power generation, and plans to commercialize pentane currently flared at Atuabo.
She appealed to the media to support the project and hold the company accountable to its timelines.
“We have chosen, deliberately chosen, to be a friend of the media. We at Ghana Gas really take it literally. We are friends of the media,” she stressed.
