President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to be grateful for the peace and security the country has enjoyed over the years, despite its challenging political history.
He said Ghana had gone through several difficult periods, including a series of successful military coups, the Operation Feed Yourself programme and the revolutionary period before the return to constitutional rule.
Reflecting on the country’s 70-year history, President Mahama said Ghanaians had every reason to appreciate the fact that the country had remained peaceful and united, unlike several other countries experiencing civil wars and insecurity.
“Not many countries have been lucky to still be in one piece. There are many countries in which civil wars are taking place, and they don’t have peace,” he said.
During his engagement with the Ghanaian community in Moscow, he noted that Ghana remained safe and secure, allowing citizens to go about their daily activities and contribute to building the economy.
“Luckily for Ghana, our country is safe and secure. People are going about their business by trying to build our economy, and the economy is responding appropriately,” President Mahama added.
He said all the experiences Ghana had gone through formed part of its history as the country prepares to mark 70 years of independence next year.
