The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Osahen Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the John Mahama administration, accusing it of employing intimidation and other tactics to undermine the Minority’s oversight role in Parliament.
He expressed concern over what he described as calculated attempts to prevent the Minority Caucus from holding the government accountable.
He, however, maintained that no amount of intimidation, arrests, persecution, or detention by the incumbent government would silence the voice of the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
“We see in this pattern and coordinated, autocratic abuse of power intended to exhaust our resolve and silence our voices.
“Let it be said loudly here that we accept lawful accountability for every citizen, including ourselves; we will resist and will never desist from resisting is a conversion of state power into an instrument of political submission that we can never compromise on,” he said, noting they would continue to represent the voiceless Ghanaians under the current government
The Minority Leader made the remarks during an encounter with the media in Parliament following the walkout staged by the caucus on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in solidarity with their colleague and Damango MP, Samuel Abu Jinapor.
The walkout followed allegations by the MP that diplomatic passports were being sold for $10,000 and $50,000, respectively, under the leadership of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Speaking further, Afenyo-Markin said the Minority was rooted in the Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition and, therefore, could not be bullied by any government.
“We shall not be moved, we shall not be cowed, and we surely shall not be silenced. We owe them fidelity. We owe our children every Ghanaian freedom. Cowardice is not in our DNA. Fear is a stranger to our heartbeat.
“Intimidation cannot break our spirits. Bullies cannot extinguish our fire to stand and fight for what is right without fear,” he added.
He further stated that “We of the New Patriotic Party, perseverance, courage, and patriotic service are woven into our being.”
