Ghanaian politician and businessman, Charles Eric Kofi Wayo, popularly known as Kofi Wayo or ‘Chuck’, has died. He was 71.
He reportedly passed away in the early hours of Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Nyaho Clinic in Accra. He lived at East Legon.
Kofi Wayo was well known in Ghana for speaking his mind on politics. He was blunt, outspoken, and never shied away from criticising governments, irrespective of which party was in power.
Although he never held a major political office, he became a household name because of his strong views on corruption, governance and the economy.
He was active in party politics for many years. He started with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and contested the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat in the 2000 elections, but lost.
His relationship with the NPP later soured after he openly criticised the Kufuor administration. He then moved on, associated with the People’s National Convention (PNC), and eventually formed his own party, the United Renaissance Party (URP), which he led.
In 2012, he was endorsed as the URP’s presidential candidate.
Outside politics, Kofi Wayo was also known for his interest in agriculture and his support for farmers, including the distribution of farming tools like cutlasses.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
