Dr. Tony Aidoo has labeled President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the “greatest conman” in Ghana’s history, accusing him of deceiving Ghanaians with promises to gain their trust during his quest for the presidency.

The prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) asserted that the President’s image and promises from 2016 were sugar-coated but his administration has failed to deliver on its commitments.

According to Dr. Aidoo, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under Akufo-Addo has been characterized by economic mismanagement, yet they have consistently deflected blame onto external factors such as the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show, hosted by Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, Dr. Aidoo criticized President Akufo-Addo’s promises-turned-excuses, highlighting the disconnection between his promises and his performance.

“We did not vote for Akufo-Addo to come and give us excuses. We voted for him to manage the country towards prosperity. He promised to make everybody rich with policies like the ‘One Million Dollars, One Constituency,’ but he turned out to be the greatest conman this country has ever seen,” he said.

Dr. Aidoo questioned the government’s repeated reliance on external factors as excuses for its failures, urging them to take responsibility.

“When Akufo-Addo was campaigning in 2016, did he not realize that external factors can affect an economy? If he knew, why did he lie to Ghanaians that he could reset Ghana’s economy towards prosperity within 18 months? Was he God at the time there will not be any COVID-19?”

Defending his remarks, Dr. Aidoo clarified that his criticism was not personal but rather focused on the President’s governance.

“This is not an attack on his personality. It is an attack on his work. I am addressing his governance, not who he is as a person,” he emphasized.

The seasoned NDC politician also referenced Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s famous statement: “When the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you,” and linked it to the NPP’s poor economic performance.

“So, by that same kind of logical reasoning, when your economy is weak, external factors will expose you,” Dr. Tony Aidoo concluded.
