The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, led a delegation to Jubilee House to present the 2025 Democracy Cup trophy to President John Dramani Mahama.
The event drew notable figures from the sports sector, including Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams, Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kurt Okraku.
Representatives from Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, the two participating team’s to battle out for the trophy were also present.
The Democracy Cup, in its second edition is scheduled for September 5 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
Initiated by Parliament in 2024, the Democracy Cup aims to foster civic participation and promote national cohesion through the medium of football.
The maiden edition took place on July 17, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Kumasi Asante Kotoko narrowly defeated Hearts of Oak 2-1 to lift the inaugural trophy.
Now a key event on Ghana’s football calendar, the Democracy Cup honors the nation’s democratic journey while showcasing the power of sport to unite communities.
