The Ghana Embassy in Washington, D.C. has confirmed that former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is providing consular assistance.
According to a statement from the Embassy, Ofori-Atta declined to engage with consular officials without his lawyers present.
The Embassy remains in contact with U.S. authorities to ensure Ofori-Atta’s rights are respected.
Ofori-Atta is facing corruption charges in Ghana related to the SML scandal, and Ghana has requested his extradition.
His lawyers claim the detention is linked to his immigration status, and he’s cooperating with authorities.
